Changes to the FoodCycle Board of Trustees

  • December 14, 2023

Stephen Catling (Chair), Mark Game and Pippa Garland leave the board of trustees after a combined 21 years of service.

Stephen Catling who has been involved with FoodCycle for the past nine years, first came across the charity when mentoring a secondee.  Whilst supporting the team in this capacity he realised that he could give so much more by using skills and experience to help the organisation grow further.

Historically FoodCycle’s had been very focused on saving surplus food but it was around the time that Stephen joined that is was agreed that building communities and making friends were just as important when it came to outcomes.

Joining the board as a trustee in 2017, Stephen brought a wealth of experience having worked in the food, food ingredients and specialty chemical industry for over 30 years.  It was in 2018 that he then became Chair.

Mary McGrath, CEO says: “Stephen was instrumental in strengthening our board.  Over the years he has provided FoodCycle with strong governance and has been hugely supportive of the organisation.  He helped us through the challenges of the pandemic and trying to keep our services running and again, post pandemic when we could return to our mission of bringing FoodCycle community meals to as many locations in the country as possible.”

Mark Game joined FoodCycle as a Trustee in September 2017. Mark has been a leading light within the surplus food redistribution sector for over 20 years, tirelessly working to rescue and transform edible surplus food for social and environmental purpose.

Mark has provided great support to the operations team at FoodCycle and helping, particularly in our early days, to secure as much surplus food as possible. During his time as trustee, Mark also set up the charity The Bread and Butter Thing, which serves as a mobile food pantry for people on low incomes and is one of the leading charities in this sector.

Pippa Garland has also been a trustee since 2017. Pippa is currently a charity lawyer and partner in the charity and social business team at Russell-Cooke.

Pippa advises charities and social enterprises on legal and commercial issues, including corporate structure, governance and regulatory compliance. Whilst at FoodCycle Pippa has helped us ensure that we remain legal and has supported up with advise and guidance on things such as contracts with major funders. It’s been fantastic to have Pippa as a safe pair of hands with incredible expertise on charity law in particular.

FoodCycle CEO of 10 years, Mary McGrath will take on the role of chair of the board from 1st January 2024 and at the same time, Sophie Tebbetts will start her new role as CEO.
