Top Tips to Reduce Food Waste

  • March 14, 2022

Have you signed up to take part in A Week Less Wasted? Our nationwide sponsored challenge to reduce food waste for a week in August.

There’s still time. Sign up, ask your family and friends to back you and then let no food go to waste for a week.

We’re here to share some of our top FoodCycle tips for reducing food waste in your home and office.

  • Shop Smart – Check what you have and make a list before you go shopping. Only buy what you need.
  • Leftovers – Save and actually eat your leftovers. Keep them in labelled containers so you can keep track of them and make them a part of your daily routine.
  • Bananas – Keep them out of your fruit bowl. They will make all your fruit ripen quicker.

Recuce food waste

  • Be Fridge Smart – Don’t let food go off at the back of the fridge. Move older food to the front so you can always see it.
  • Best Before – Don’t throw food away before its ‘Best Before’ date.  It’s still safe to eat and super tasty.
  • Eat the Skin – Leave the skin on your fruits and veggies. Not only is it tasty, but it’s full of nutrients and also reduces waste.

Reduce food waste

  • Use the Yolk – Egg yolks are packed with nutrients, including protein, vitamin A, iron and vitamin B. Use the whole egg in your omelettes and scrambled eggs.
  • Keep Cool – It may seem simple but check your fridge temperature. It should be between 0-5°C to keep food fresh.
  • Fill Your Bin – Your food waste bin! You can recycle coffee grounds, eggshells, tea bags and peelings. If you have a garden you’ve got ready-made compost.
  • Freeze Friendly – Freeze your leftovers, milk and bread. Puree and freeze your leftover fruit and veg. Label and date everything for your convenience.

Reduce food waste

  • Love Lunch – Making your own lunch can save you money, improve your cooking skills, reduce plastic waste and use up leftover food. What’s not to love.
  • Skip a Shop – Skip your food shop one day a week and cook a meal with ingredients that might otherwise go to waste.
  • Keep Track – Write down what you’re throwing away. You’ll be able to spot patterns and plan your meals with greater care.

Reduce food waste

  • Blend Bits – Blending smoothies are a tasty and healthy way of using fruits and veggies. You can add stems, tops, ends and peels to really make the most of your ingredients.
